How Long Does Local SEO Take to Work?

Weeks for the quick wins, months for the real ones. Here's the honest timeline — with measured numbers from our own client accounts, not industry folklore.

The short answer

Google Business Profile fixes can move you in two to six weeks. New content starts earning clicks in two to four months. Competitive rankings — the searches every business in town wants — usually take six to twelve months of steady work. Anyone promising page one in thirty days is describing either a search nobody makes or a trick that won't last.

Why it takes months, not days

Google decides rankings on trust, and trust accumulates. New pages have to be crawled, indexed, and tested against searchers before Google commits to ranking them. Reviews arrive one customer at a time. Other sites link to you when they find you worth linking to — which takes being findable first.

That's slower than anyone wants. It's also why SEO holds its value: rankings earned over months don't evaporate the day you stop paying, the way ads do.

What moves fastest

  • Fixing your Google Business Profile category and filling out the profile — weeks
  • Technical repairs, like pages Google can't crawl or a site that fails on phones — weeks once fixed
  • Pages for services you offer but never wrote down — two to four months to earn their place
  • Outranking established competitors on the big searches — six to twelve months

What real progress looks like — actual numbers

From our own measured client results, counting only non-branded traffic — people who did not search the business's name: a roofing contractor went from average position 59 to 22 in twelve months, with non-branded clicks up 132%. An insurance agency moved from position 23 to 16 and more than doubled its non-branded clicks over the same window.

Notice the shape: positions climb for months before the phone rings more. That's normal. Position 59 to 22 is enormous progress, and most of it happened before the click numbers caught up.

How to tell it's working before you hit page one

Impressions rise first — Google showing you to more searchers is it testing you. Average position climbs next, then keywords entering the top ten, then clicks, then calls. If your SEO report shows none of these moving after four months, ask hard questions. If it only shows traffic totals without separating out people who already knew your name, ask harder ones.

The red flags in SEO promises

  • Guaranteed rankings or "page one in 30 days" — nobody controls Google
  • Reports counting branded traffic — people who searched your name were coming anyway
  • Secret methods that can't be explained in plain words
  • Pressure to sign a long contract before any audit of your actual site

Common questions

Can SEO go faster if I spend more?

Somewhat — more content and fixes sooner compresses the timeline. But trust still accrues at Google's pace. If you need calls this month, run ads alongside SEO; that's what they're for.

Why do SEO companies count branded traffic?

Because it makes flat results look like growth. Your name getting searched is your reputation working, not their SEO. We strip it out of every report we send.

Does SEO ever not work?

Yes — when the market is too far away (proximity limits map rankings), the searches don't exist, or the site can't support the work. An honest audit finds that out before you spend, which is why ours is free.

What does local SEO cost?

Our packages run $195 to $1,500 a month, depending on the size of the business and the market. We shape the work to your budget — and tell you honestly what your industry and competition actually call for.
